WORD DEFINITIONS

I try to add new words often.

[Alphabetical Order]

[Astronomical Unit or AU]- Average distance between the Earth and Sun. which is about 93 million miles or 150 million kilometers. The Astronomical Unit is usually used to measure distances within our Solar System.

[Astronomy]- Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial objects and phenomena. It applies mathematics, physics, and chemistry in an effort to explain the origin of those objects and phenomena and their evolution.

[Atom]- The smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist.

[Cosmic]- Relating to the universe or cosmos, especially as distinct from the earth.

[Electromagnetic]- Relating to the interrelation of electric currents or fields and magnetic fields.

[Elongated]- Make (something) longer, especially unusually so in relation to its width.

[Elliptical]- Difficult to understand.

[Energy]- Power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or to work machines.

[Equilibrium]- A state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced.

[Exoplanet]- An exoplanet or extrasolar planet is a planet outside the Solar System

[Gravity]- The force that attracts a body towards the center of the earth, or towards any other physical body having mass.

[Heliosphere]- The sun sends out a constant flow of charged particles called the solar wind, which ultimately travels past all the planets to some three times the distance to Pluto before being impeded by the interstellar medium. This forms a giant bubble around the sun and its planets, known as the heliosphere. NASA studies the heliosphere to better understand the fundamental physics of the space surrounding us - which, in turn, provides information regarding space throughout the rest of the universe, as well as regarding what makes planets habitable. The heliosphere protects us from harmful cosmic radiation.

[Hydrostatic]- Relating to or denoting the equilibrium of liquids and the pressure exerted by liquid at rest.

[International Astronomical Union or IAU]- The International Astronomical Union is an international association of professional astronomers, at the Ph.D. level and beyond, active in professional research and education in astronomy.

[Lightyear]- A unit of astronomical distance equivalent to the distance that light travels in one year, which is 9.4607 × 1012 km (nearly 10 trillion kilometers)

[Magnetic Field]-  A region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force of magnetism acts.

[Mass]- A large body of matter with no definite shape.

[Moon]- A natural satellite of a planet.

[Orbit]- The curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon, especially a periodic elliptical revolution.

[Planet]- A celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star.

[Radiation]- The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles which cause ionization.

[Space Probe]-  A space probe is a robotic spacecraft that does not orbit Earth, but instead, explores further into outer space. A space probe may approach the Moon; travel through interplanetary space; flyby, orbit, or land on other planetary bodies; or enter interstellar space.

[Subatomic]- Smaller than or occurring within an atom.
