THE 5 DWARF PLANETS

Last updated: 28/05/2019

The Solar System has 5 dwarf planets. [Order from the Sun] Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. [Largest to smallest] Pluto, Eris, Makemake, Haumea, and Ceres.

Why aren't they planets:

A planet is to orbit the Sun and has to have a sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium(nearly round shape) It also has to be large enough to dominate its orbit (its mass must be much larger than anything else which crosses its orbit)

These dwarf planets might have some of the requirements ticked off, but they need all of them. Pluto was demoted to dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union(IAU) because it did not dominate its orbit.

Eris was once thought to be larger than Pluto. But that was later discovered false. Pluto is lightly larger than Eris, but Eris is more massive.

The dwarf planets are still big enough to have moons and ring systems. Also, moons aren't considered planets because they orbit planets, not the Sun.
